o you remember the Poco F1 from last year? When it launched, the tech community blew its mind. For less than Rs 25,000, Xiaomi was offering a flagship-grade chipset in a phone at a price that could have only fetched you a decent midrange smartphone. The Poco F1 set an example that cheap phones can also be powerful, even though the phone was flawed in build, software and elsewhere.
It's the latter bit that still gave people a good reason to spend more for an expensive phone. Xiaomi tried addressing that with the Redmi K20 Pro but the higher asking price didn't really hit it with the consumers this time, despite the K20 Pro being a better all-rounder phone than the Poco F1. Realme now thinks it can fill up the gap with its latest flagship offering. And yes, this is a flagship Realme phone in every sense.
Boys and girls, meet the Realme X2 Pro - Realme's first attempt at making a proper flagship-grade phone pouring in the best of all technologies. Prices start at Rs 29,999 for the base variant and it burns your wallet harder if you bump up the specifications.
For the price, what's baffling is that you are getting the same Snapdragon 855 Plus chipset that you usually find in phones like the OnePlus 7T and ROG Phone 2. And it's not that it only gets the muscles and no shoes. The X2 Pro is similar to the ones I mentioned here and from where I am seeing, it makes it quite hard to justify spending extra for another 855 Plus powered phone, unless user experience is prime on your preference.
That's not bad in any way, given that the prime motive behind the Realme X2 Pro was to bring a dash of a premium smartphone experience with regards to design and build. The front of the phone measures exactly the same inch-by-inch as the one on the OnePlus 7T Pro. However, at the back, Realme goes for a distinct look with a centrally mounted quad camera setup as well as an off-centre location of the Realme branding. It appears weird initially but once you get used to it, it hardly bothers anymore.
Rest of the phone is built beautifully, with the classic Oppo/Realme frame design and a beautiful glass panel with curved edges at the back with subtle gradient colours. The design makes it easy to hold but all the metal and glass have translated to a weight of 199 grams, which is heavy and you will feel it while using it for long. I wish Realme could have inherited the Alert Slider from the OnePlus phones.
On the whole, though, the Realme X2 Pro looks simple and plain jane, especially when you consider the Redmi K20 Pro in its beautiful gradient shades. It's a handsome phone but Realme has played it too safe with the design here. An extra tinge of zing could make the X2 Pro look exciting.
the display on Realme X2 Pro is almost identical to the one on the OnePlus 7T.It has the same dimensions, measuring 6.5-inches diagonally and even retains the small waterdrop style notch on top. The bezels are thin but they aren't as slim as the ones on the Redmi K20 Pro. The AMOLED panel has Full HD+ resolution and it also gets an optical in-display fingerprint scanner. And in performance, it's identical to the display on the OnePlus 7T.
The display is always vibrant with rich colours and high contrasts. Brightness levels are high for indoors while outdoors under direct sunlight, it still offers enough brightness to make the screen contents legible. The viewing angles are wide with very little colour shift at extreme angles. This is a very good display and whether you browsing through Instagram or watching movies on Netflix, the experience is always enjoyable. The 90Hz refresh rate makes animations and videos look smoother but if you care about the battery life, you can dial it down to 60Hz.
